Modern-day Audubon uses art an

Like a modern-day John James Audubon, C.E. Blevins uses art to celebrate what he sees as nature's wonder -- bird eggs.

"I have loved bird eggs since I was 4 years old," said the 84-year-old retired minister, missionary and art teacher. "Now I'm the only man in the world who lays eggs, so far as I know."

In the past 20 years, Mr. Blevins, of Apison, has sculpted and painted 25,000 to 35,000 clay eggs -- perfect replicas of the real eggs of more than 1,200 bird species.

Creating the likenesses of everything from pea-sized hummingbird eggs to 13-inch-long elephant bird eggs, Mr. Blevins has become very good at his hobby-turned-craft. His eggs and his teaching skills have been used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in teaching programs, said UTC's Dr. David Aborn.

"The eggs are extremely accurate," said Dr. Aborn, ornithologist of the department of biological and environmental sciences at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a board member of the C.E. Blevins Avian Learning Center.

The center is a museum for the massive folk-art egg collection. Mr. Blevins' chanel new bags family opened the Cohutta, Ga., facility to honor the educator and his one-of-a-kind craft and to help visitors learn about birds and art. The museum is open by reservation to group tours, said Joel Blevins, son of the artist.

Elementary and middle school students receive a biology lesson, tour the museum and participate in an art project, the younger Mr. Blevins said.

"It sounds goofy when you call somebody and say, 'I have an egg museum,'" he said, adding that people often brush him off when he tries to tout the unique effort or solicit help. "There's a virtual egg museum in Canada, but they don't have real replicas, and they don't have 1,200 species."

He said the study of eggs, called oology, has a speckled past thanks to early researchers and collectors whose zeal to take eggs contributed even to the extinction of at least one bird: the great auk.

Now it is illegal to collect either the real eggs or the real nests of wild birds without a federal permit.

The difficulty of real egg collection and their fragility in displays all added to the elder Mr. Blevins' drive to re-create nature, his son said. And what began for his father as a hobby art project soon became something more.

"Dad wanted to make eggs out of clay so kids could hold them," the younger Mr. Blevins said. "You can tell a lot about the species just by looking at the eggs."

BRAD HINTZ, ANALYST, SANFORD BERNSTEIN: Good morning.

KEENE: Buried in your note, wow, on Goldman Sachs. Did the Spitzer Research Analyst Scandal destroy the retail brokerage franchises of Merrill City and Morgan Stanley? No. Did the IPO laddering or spinning cases destroy equity capital franchises like Morgan or Credit Suisse? No. And you suggest Goldman Sachs will survive. Why will they survive?

HINTZ: Well, one, what you're seeing right now is the pullback - the pullback are the discretionary trades. So, yes, do I have to do an equity trade with Goldman? No. Do I have to do an underwriting with Goldman? Do I want to do prime brokerage with Goldman? Absolutely. Do I want to do M&A with Goldman? No question. Do I want an equity underwriting? Yes. So the key, the core businesses, you're not seeing that loss. And so you know are we going to have an impact in terms of clients being nervous? Yes, but it's not going to be long-term impact on a Goldman.

KEENE: Will they get the Ute brain drain? There are people at Goldman not making a kajillion dollars a year. Do they get picked off by the other firms?

HINTZ: There's never any shortage of talent on Wall Street and the NBA's lining up to come into Goldman Sachs. The model of Goldman holds together as long as the partnership holds together. KEENE: You mentioned equity trading needs a pop here. Is equity trading ready to take the baton? Give us a briefing on that, we don't talk about that now. First, define equity trading.

HINTZ: Equity trading is institutional equity execution and the derivative side. What did surprise us this quarter was that derivatives were so strong at Goldman. Typically, the derivatives books are long volatility and it's in volatility drop this time. It was really a surprise to us that Goldman's derivatives book held up so well. We're going to be going into a slowdown in terms of trade volume, that always happen during the summertime. But we're -

KEENE: I thought Goldman Sachs just worked until like May 1 and then everybody shows up the second week of September. No? No, wait that's Sanford Bernstein that does that. Go ahead, Ken.

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Fac

Objective: The Val66Met polymorphism of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene is associated with geriatric depression. In studies of younger adults without depression, met allele carriers exhibit smaller hippocampal volumes and have poorer performance on neuropsychological tests. The authors examined the relationship between the BDNF gene and hippocampal volumes in depressed and nondepressed older individuals and its relationship with memory functions mediated by the hippocampus. Design: One hundred seventy-six elderly depressed white participants and 88 nondepressed participants completed clinical assessments, neuropsychological testing, and provided blood samples for genotyping. One hundred seventy-three participants also underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging. Statistical modeling tested the relationship between genotype and hippocampal volume and function while controlling for diagnosis and other covariates. Results: BDNF genotype was not associated with a difference in performance on tests mediated by the hippocampus, including word list learning, prose recall, nonverbal memory, or digit span. After controlling for covariates, BDNF genotype was not significantly associated with hippocampal volume (F^sub [1, 171]^ = 1.10, p = 0.30). Conclusion: Despite different findings in younger populations, the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism is not significantly associated with hippocampal volume or function in a geriatric population. The authors hypothesize that other factors may have a stronger effect on hippocampal structure in older individuals and that the association between the Val66Met polymorphism and geriatric depression is mediated through other mechanisms. The etiology of depression remains unexplained. In general, depression may be driven by altered neural and emotional response to environmental stimuli, coupled with decreased ability to regulate that emotional response. Depressed individuals exhibit smaller hippocampal volumes, when compared with nondepressed individuals,5 a finding also observed in elderly populations,6 although not always replicated.7,8 Smaller hippocampal volumes in depressed subjects are associated as adverse antidepressant outcomes including a failure to remit9'10 and greater likelihood of relapse.11 It is possible that genetic differences may explain part of the discrepancy in results of studies exarrtining hippocampal volume in depression. One potentially important contributor is the valine (val) to methionine (met) substitution in the 5' proregion of the human brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein, a result of a functional SNP (Val66Met). There's a video of Anna and me on the Free Press website. My buddy, Bob watched it and -- I'm sure this came from his heart -- said it was like watching a huge clumsy bear escape from a zoo, stumble on a beautiful young girl and, in super slow motion, attack her on a dance floor.
