EMBELLISHMENT, in the form of sequins, jewels and crystals has become the latest trend to hit the fashion world. And where once we were told that less is more, the new byword in style is now excess.

According to fashion expert Bonnie Rakhit of Elle Magazine, there are many ways to get the look.

"Embellishment has taken a variety of forms this season, from craft inspired pieces at Chloe and delicate foil dresses at Prada, to Christopher Kane's sporty yet ribbon and jewel emblazoned body conscious dresses and full-on crystal overload at Burberry," she says.

Edinburgh fashion designer Nicola Melvin agrees. "Clothes embellished with sequins, jewels and crystals are all about making an impact. But you shouldn't be intimidated if you like a more understated look," she says.

"There are all sorts of different interpretations of the trend."

Embellished dresses and tops are the ideal way to glamorise your look in an instant.

But as embellishment continues to be a hot trend for autumn, it's important to buy wisely.

"Tunics and T-shirt dresses, and other loose fits are big," explains Nicola, "But remember to keep hair, make-up, and all other accessories simple and minimal.

"It's all very well to make an impact but you want it to be in the right way. Try closed-toe shoes and plain coloured tights to balance the look."

But if you prefer a more dressed-down look then eye catching accessories such as large brooches, sparkly ear-rings or jewel encrusted clutch bags are ideal.

Head to Warehouse, Zara, Oli, Matthew Williamson at Debenhams, Oasis, or visit ASOS for accessories and a wide range of clothing designs from those with subtle detailing to designs with more impact. There's no need to relegate embellishment to evening wear as clothes can look on-trend in the daylight hours without looking over the top. The important thing to remember is not to overload the look - choose one embellished item and keep the rest simple.

Go for Marks & Spencer's Limited pink embellished trim tunic and Miss Selfridge's white woven sequin dress, or try on a pretty cardigan or wrap with detailing like Kaliko's white gem embellished cardigan, LK Bennett's sequinned cardigan or Principles black jewel embellished cardigan.

But don't do embellished from top-to-toe. Show off your shiny side with clothing or accessories, but don't attempt to over-dazzle or outshine others by wearing them all at the same time. You have been warned.
