Gardens event fills gap in wel

THE gardens in Newent are currently looking superb.

Our own has been enthusiastically watered by our little grand- daughters, helping Grandpa.

Newent flower-arrangers, from St Mary's Church will be helping with the flower festival at Gloucester Cathedral festival of flowers. Fundraising for the display includes the open garden of Dr and Mrs Gareth Williams at Lower Farm House, Clifford's Mesne from 6pm on Wednesday, June 16.

Many of you may have grasped the chance to see the garden when it was open for Christian Aid last month. One grumble that is sometimes raised (not by my neighbours) when collections are made for Christian Aid is that charity should begin at home. Well, from June 17, in Newent, so it does. At least, it begins from the rear of the Shambles complex, off Court Lane. It's an emergency food scheme whereby vouchers, issued by a range of local agencies, can be exchanged for up to three days' emergency supplies of food and other items. It is NOT a scroungers' charter. Our welfare state safety net has gaps in it - and this scheme aims to fill the gaps for people in the Newent area.

Donations Where does the food come from? Donations which are left at various collection points throughout the town. The church Replica watches is grateful for the support of Newent's other churches, the supermarkets, traders, schools and community agencies. Further information can be obtained from the church office on 01531 821641.

I meant to go and listen to Gloucester Brass Band last weekend but was struck low by a cough. The grand-daughters had it first - and after I succumbed, I forgave them their midnight grizzles! There seems to be a lot of it about, hitting some harder than others.

The Newent in Bloom competition is approaching fast. To make sure our town is looking its best, there is a "Town Tidy-up" on Tuesday, June 29. Meet at the Chill-out Zone at 6pm with gloves, brooms and shovels!

The Community School has a well-established link with a school in Kenya. Support for the link has spread to Newent as a whole, including Newent Rotary Club. It is to be celebrated on Friday, June 25, between 4pm and 7pm. Events will include poetry and dance performances; displays from Kenya Week lessons; flying demonstrations from the International Centre for Birds of Prey; refreshments and many stalls with a wide range of hand-crafted items for sale.
